When Brother John R. Gilpin was editor, The Baptist Examiner was not KJVO either.. It was still Baptist, Calvinistic, Premillenial, and Biblical but it was not KJVO. Here’s a few quotes covering the decades when he was editor:
July 6, 1940 (This was just reprinted in the Landmark Baptist – July/August 2024 edition) –
The First Word of the Prophecy
Isaiah 18:1
It isn’t “woe,” but “ho.” Cf. Isa. 55:1. The Revised Version realized the mistake of the King James translators and corrects it to read, “ah.”
“Shadowed With Wings”
The Revised Version translates this as “out-stretched wings.” Everyone knows that the eagle with outstretched wings is the emblem of the United States as a nation.
April 19, 1941 –
Hades means the unseen abode of the dead whether lost or saved in the same sense that the grave is their abode. The English word “hell” does not mean the same today as 330 years ago when the King James version was made. Hades, Gehenna, and Tartarus were all translated “hell” by the King James version. This misleads one in studying the scriptures on the intermediate state. Therefore, one should consult the Revised Version on these scriptures.
January 5, 1946 –
The above events all occurred in the month Nisan or Auib: Ex. 12:2; 34:18, and Esther 3:7. (All references are to American Standard Version.)
March 9, 1946 –
Episcopal scholars translated the King James version, and they rendered he word “Passover” by the term “Easter” so as to justify its observance. So, the truth is there !s not a single mention of Easter in a correct translation of the Bible. American Standard Version translated “Passover.”
May 14, 1949 –
Paul asked them, according to the Revised Version: “Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed?” They answered that they knew nothing of the Holy Spirit.
January 14, 1950 –
You will notice the King James Version, from which I have read, says, “He hath set the world in their heart,” but if you will notice in the margin of your Bible, the word “world” is translated “ages,” so as to literally say that He has set all future ages in man’s heart. However, the Revised Version I think comes nearer to the meaning when it says, “He hath set eternity in their hearts.”
August 8, 1953, the issue of the RSV is addressed but notice this is hardly a KJVO Position –
“To the best of our knowledge the scholarly editors of the Revised Version of 1885, the American Standard Version of 1901 and also the authorized Version of 1611, were Godly men, every one of them. They believed the Bible to be just what it claims to be, the infallible verbally inspired Word of God which is God’s objective and final revelation of Himself to sinful men.
To the best of our knowledge, not one of the editors of the Revised Standard Version believes the Bible in this way just mentioned.”
January 17, 1959 –
I Corinthians 12:13
“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”
A false interpretation of this verse is the citadel for at least two heresies: (1) the modern notion as to Holy Spirit baptism, and (2) the “mystical Body” or invisible church heresy. We shall show that the verse teaches neither.
1. First, the proper translation of the Greek should be noted. The English Revised Version reads: “For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit.” The American Standard Version reads the same.
The significant thing about this rendering is the use of the word “in” to translate the Greek preposition “en.” It is not “by one Spirit,” as in the King James Version, but “in one
Spirit.”
November 4, 1961 –
What is the meaning of the words, “in the sides of the north?” The Revised Version reads, “in the uttermost parts of the north.”
August 4, 1962 –
Christ said to unbelievers: “But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you” (John 5:42). The Christless may have a “form of godliness” (outward religion), but they are “lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God” — II Timothy 3:4 (A.S.V). Instead of love to God, the unsaved are enmity to God! “Because the mind of the flesh” (and every unregenerate person “is flesh”— John 3:6) “is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be” (Rom. 8:7, American Standard Version).
January 5, 1963 –
When the redeemed man’s works shall be burned, though he himself shall be saved (I Cor. 3:15), he shall suffer loss (I Cor. 3:15), and the loss shall be irreparable, eternal, and so great that no human being in this age can fully realize it. Here the old translation, the King James version, has misled us. The oft-quoted sentence, “What is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” is a mistranslation.
The Revised Version translates it correctly: “What shall a man be profited, if he shall gain the whole world and forfeit his life, or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?”—Matt. 16:26.
April 17, 1971 –
“The American Standard Version gives the correct translation of Ezekiel 38:2 where Gog is called “the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal.” The King James translators were wrong in making Rosh have the adjective meaning of chief. It is a proper noun. Rosh is probably the root of our modern word Russia. It is quite Common for the consonants to remain the same and the vowels to be changed. If the vowel “o” is changed to “u” it becomes the root of our word, “Russia,” with the suffix added.
December 8, 1973 –
Paul told the church at Corinth (I Cor. 11:18-20) quoting the Revised Version, that if there was division or heresy present it was not possible to eat the Lord’s Supper.
December 22, 1973 –
“May I first call attention to the fact that the Holy Ghost and the Holy Spirit are the translation of just one word in the original Greek New Testament. The word is “pneurna” and it should have always been translated “spirit” as it is in the American Standard Version and most modern versions. The Holy Ghost and the Holy Spirit are not two different persons as some assume.”
